Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680: 603 HP, 627 lb-ft, and a Private Cosmos on Wheels

2027 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680

The 2027 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680 arrives as the most powerful and technologically advanced Maybach SUV to date. It replaces the GLS 600 with a revised M177 Evo V8, upgraded MB.OS infotainment, and a suite of comfort features engineered for rear-seat dominance.

Powertrain and Performance Logic

Mercedes fits the GLS 680 with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 (M177 Evo) paired to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The internal combustion engine produces 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The integrated starter-generator (ISG) adds up to 23 hp for transient response and smoother stop-start operation.

From an expert perspective, the 89 lb-ft torque increase over the GLS 600 matters more than the peak horsepower figure. It flattens the torque curve between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm, reducing the need for downshifts during highway merging or mountain passes. The nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic manages shift logic to prioritize comfort over sportiness, holding gears longer and upshifting earlier under light throttle.

  • Engine: 4.0L twin-turbo V8 (M177 Evo) + 48V ISG
  • Power: 603 hp (450 kW) + 23 hp electric boost
  • Torque: 627 lb-ft (850 Nm)
  • 0–60 mph: under 4.5 seconds
  • Top speed: 155 mph (electronically limited)
  • Drivetrain: 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive

Chassis, Suspension, and Ride Quality

The GLS 680 rides on AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive damping as standard. Higher trims add E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, which uses a 48-volt hydraulic system to actively counteract body roll, pitch, and dive. This system scans the road ahead and pre-loads dampers before hitting imperfections.

Consequently, the Maybach isolates occupants from road noise and surface irregularities better than the standard GLS. The long wheelbase—123.4 inches (3,135 mm)—contributes to ride stability by spreading mass over a greater distance, reducing the angular velocity of pitch motions.

Looking at the data, the GLS 680 measures 205.5 inches (5,219 mm) in length, 79.9 inches (2,030 mm) in width, and 72.4 inches (1,838 mm) in height. Curb weight reaches approximately 6,195 lb (2,810 kg), yet the power-to-weight ratio remains competitive at roughly 10.3 lb/hp.

Exterior Design and Lighting Technology

Mercedes distinguishes the Maybach with an illuminated Black Panel grille and a standing hood star that lights up during approach. The front bumper features larger air intakes and chrome accents exclusive to the Maybach line. Side profiles include chrome B-pillars, window surrounds, and lower rocker panels.

Standard wheels measure 22 inches with a 20-hole design. Optional 23-inch forged monoblock wheels feature a precision ball-bearing mechanism that keeps the Maybach star logo vertically aligned regardless of wheel rotation. This detail mirrors Rolls-Royce's self-righting center caps and signals attention to brand presentation.

Interior Architecture and Rear-Seat Experience

The cabin prioritizes the second row with two individual reclining seats separated by a fixed center console. These seats offer heating, ventilation, and massage functions with multiple programs. The console houses a removable tablet for climate and media control, plus cupholders and storage compartments.

In addition, the MBUX Superscreen spans the dashboard with three 12.3-inch displays: one for the driver, one for infotainment, and one for the front passenger. Rear passengers receive two additional screens mounted on the front seatbacks, plus a central touchscreen in the console. The system runs MB.OS, Mercedes' latest operating software with faster processing and improved voice recognition.

  • Seating: 4-passenger layout (no third row)
  • Infotainment: MBUX Superscreen (3x 12.3-inch) + MB.OS
  • Audio: Burmester 3D Surround with 15 speakers, 710 watts, Dolby Atmos
  • Headliner: MANUFAKTUR hand-stitched leather or microfiber
  • Ambient lighting: 64-color with illuminated air vents

Cargo capacity measures 18.4 cubic feet (520 liters) behind the second row. The absence of a third row maximizes rear legroom but limits utility compared to the seven-seat GLS. Power-retracting running boards extend 81.1 inches (2,060 mm) in length and deploy automatically for easier entry.

Pricing and Market Positioning

Mercedes has not announced final U.S. pricing for the 2027 GLS 680. The 2026 GLS 600 started at $181,350 including destination. Industry estimates place the GLS 680 near $190,000 to $200,000 as a starting MSRP.

By comparison, the Bentley Bentayga starts above $200,000, while the Rolls-Royce Cullinan exceeds $350,000. The Maybach undercuts both rivals while offering comparable rear-seat luxury and superior technology integration.

Pro-Tip: Maximizing Resale Value

Order the 23-inch forged wheels with self-righting center caps and the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension. These options differentiate the GLS 680 from lower trims and appeal to future buyers seeking the full Maybach experience. Document all service records and avoid aggressive tuning that could void powertrain warranties.

Should you lease or buy the GLS 680?

Lease if you plan to upgrade in three years and want predictable monthly costs. Buy if you intend to keep the vehicle beyond five years and can benefit from equity retention in the ultra-luxury segment.
