Jeep has always been a brand that celebrates its heritage and legacy, and its latest concept vehicle is no exception. The Jeep Cherokee 1978 4xe is a resto-mod project that combines the classic looks of the original Jeep Cherokee (SJ) with the cutting-edge powertrain of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The result is a stunning vehicle that pays tribute to the past while embracing the future.
The Jeep Cherokee (SJ) was introduced in 1974 as a sporty, two-door version of the Jeep Wagoneer. It featured bucket seats, a sports steering wheel, and racy detailing that appealed to younger, more adventurous drivers. In 1975, Jeep added the Wide-Track option, which included exterior stripes, larger tires, wider axles, bigger wheel cutouts, and an upgraded interior.
The Jeep Cherokee 1978 4xe concept is based on a 1978 Jeep Cherokee Wide-Track model, which was modified to accommodate the Wrangler 4xe powertrain. The exterior retains the vintage Jeep's original proportions and paint scheme but with some modern touches, such as LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights. The interior also preserves the retro vibe with a fabric roof, leather seats, and wood trim but adds a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system.
The Jeep Cherokee 1978 4xe concept features the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The system delivers a combined output of 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to all four wheels through a transfer case that offers rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and high- or low-range four-wheel drive modes.
